CreativeMornings /Auckland with The Bread and Butter Letter
Friday 24 March, 8.00am - 9.30am
The Kitchen, Ponsonby
This month we have the global theme of Backwards, and the CreativeMornings Auckland team has decided to take a somewhat vintage approach to the notion. And who better to speak about that, than Sarah & Rose from The Bread and Butter Letter.
The Bread and Butter Letter is an Auckland boutique that sells New Zealand made, hand crafted products alongside curated vintage, and delicious and local loose leaf tea. They represent this months theme “backwards”, as they not only sell retrospective items, but also because their business’ focuses are quite ‘backwards’.
While most companies continue to make mass-produced, low-quality items from foreign countries, T.B.A.B.L is strictly locally made, where items are made from the very hands of our creative community (including the owners themselves!).
The events they host encourage this communal focused idea, and some of their products suggest a slowing-down process like the days of old. The values are not unique to just the store, but are seen more and more in businesses of all sizes around the world.
It’s backwards, but it’s making a comeback.

CreativeMornings /Auckland with Trash Footwear
Friday 22 March, 8:00am - 9:30am
Sitka Flagship Store (limited to 50*)
This month we are lucky enough this dynamic duo all the way up from Raglan, Ben Galloway & Melissa McMahon from Trash Footwear present on the global theme of “Reuse”.
“Imagine if they closed all the rubbish dumps tomorrow?”
Well we have, and have been building Trash Footwear with this thought in mind!
Trash Footwear is a brand that aims to inform people of the massive potential of ‘waste’ materials that would ordinarily end up in landfill; in the process questioning why we create something called ‘waste’ in the first place! Our range of footwear is made largely from locally sourced on-going waste streams, and it is through the collection of these materials that we have begun to see the many others ways in which we can transform this so-called ‘rubbish’ into *rather fancy* yet functional items! Resources are running low in this world, but rubbish isn’t!
All that is needed now is an effective and creative way of collecting, distributing and repurposing these abundant materials… maybe one that could help bridge the gap between business and community?

CreativeMornings /Auckland with Rob Garrett
Friday 26 October, 8:00am - 9:30am
Former Contemporary Art Gallery
(Entry on Lorne St, by Khartoum Square)
This month we have a couple of very exciting things happening with CreativeMornings /Auckland:
1) It’s our one-year birthday! (And yes, there will be cake)
2) We’ve collaborated with Art Week Auckland to bring you Rob Garrett presenting on the development of his recent curatorial initiative “Lost in a dream”
“Lost in a dream” is an international contemporary art exhibition curated by Rob Garrett for Snake Pit, Auckland; 19 October – 10 November 2012
“Lost in a dream” brings together fourteen renowned and emerging artists from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden and the United States whose work has excited Rob Garrett. When invited by Snake Pit to curate a show, Garrett considered the most interesting prospect would be to introduce the gallery and its audiences to new artists. Snake Pit already has a strong programme of showing young local artists and several of Garrett’s recent Auckland projects also have had this focus. Therefore he felt it would be more interesting to go further afield by inviting several Northern Hemisphere and Australian artists, but also to include some local artists who are currently completely unknown.

CreativeMornings /Auckland with Jef Wong & Hudson Smales

The kiwi design and creative community have openly expressed and shared their thoughts on the recent rebrand of the iconic Air New Zealand.
So, for the month of September, CreativeMornings /Auckland proudly presents Jef Wong Group Head of Design, Designworks and Hudson Smales who was Head of the Design House at Air New Zealand during the design process. They will both being taking you through the story behind the wordmark and the testing process behind the Air New Zealand Wordmark Development.
Air New Zealand is a brand built on a strong investment in design and innovation. Informed by the brand strategy and visual identity program, already undertaken by Air New Zealand’s design and communication partners, it was agreed that a new wordmark was needed that was better aligned with the new brand promise, of ‘liberating travelers from the ordinary’. The wordmark needed to feel more modern and be imbued with a sense of momentum, credibility and elegance that would truly represent the character of the brand.
Guided by a strict set of design principles, a highly collaborative process was undertaken between Designworks, Air New Zealand and renowned New Zealand typographer, Kris Sowersby.
